Yes – even if Northern Pulp reopens, there is more than enough biomass available locally to meet the heat demand of New Glasgow. When fully constructed, the New Glasgow’s biomass energy system would consume between 50,000 and 100,000 dry tonnes of biomass annually. If Northern Pulp reopens, there is still an estimated 400,000 dry tonnes of biomass that would be available for a bioenergy project in Pictou County. If the mill remains closed, there is nearly double that amount of biomass available. See report here.
